Presentation

Jean-Vincent Escalant was born in Oran in 1958. Raised in Africa and Latin America, he was quickly captivated by the diversity that surrounded him.

Barely 10 years old, he will try through drawing, photography and finally painting to translate the landscapes that surround him, those of this Africa so pregnant, so powerful. All his painting will remain, over time, marked by these initiating years, invaded by the memory of this land of childhood.

The attentive observer will be able to discover in many of his works, whether through the colors, or the strength of the line, the testimonies of this rooting in this founding land.

Throughout his life Jean-Vincent Escalant will remain attached to the imprints of life. After an attempt at agronomic research, he definitively committed himself to art. Although modeling clay and working with porcelain are part of his artistic expression, he makes painting his main activity.

Jean-Vincent Escalant will not deny some strong influences: like Matisse and Picasso and finally a revelation with the painter Nicolas de Staël which made him abandon the figurative in favor of the semi-figurative and abstraction.

Today in the heart of his workshop on rue Emile Jamais, he constantly attempts to create the link between the imprint of his memories and what those who look at feel and perceive.

The technique then fades away in the service of the emotion he wishes to convey.
